Updated: Dec 28, 2020

šŸ¤˜ In this review, we will look at all that makes the DJI Mavic Air 2 an amazing drone but also understand what are its limits and what are the other options out there based on your needs. But before anything, here's the official trail video from DJI, the manufacturer of the Mavic Air 2. So time to grab some šŸæ and enjoy this short and exciting video!

As you've found out the Mavic Air 2 is a great little drone that is designed for general purposes than can be used anywhere indoors or outdoors. This drone features all of the best technology available on larger DJI models, but is packed into a small, lightweight, and portable format factor that is easy to fly.

The DJI Mavic Air 2 in a nutshell

āœ… Overall the Mavic Air 2 is an excellent travel companion and a perfect mate for taking these lifetime memories. But some features are frankly quite outstanding considering its size and price with many that would only be seen on more expensive/bigger models within competition such as:

  • Longer/Further Flights: one of the longest battery lives out there, with up to 34 mins flight time and a 10 km range.

  • Obstacle avoidance: the drone comes with sensors that sense obstacles up to 23.6 m ahead and land safely if needed.

  • Return to home: if you loose control or signal, the drone can automatically come back to its starting point by flying up to 30 m and using its obstacle avoidance system.

  • Mechanical Gimbal Stabilization: your imagery will be stable and neat, no more blurred content and hello to wow effect homemade aerial videos.

šŸšØ It is not all perfect tho.. as some aspects (usually untold) might pull you off such as:

  • Noise: for its size, you would expect something quieter. Unfortunately the small propellers sounds like a big fly scaring off wildlife and making it little wind resistant.

  • Integrated camera: whilst the camera is great today, it is fixed to the drone meaning if you want a better lens, you will need to change of drone.

  • Price: its pretty expensive for its size but for this, you will get a state of art drone in its respective category.

āœ… Final good news is that alike all DJI drones, the Mavic Air 2 comes with the DJI App and offers intelligent flight modes and intuitive controls help you create cinematic aerial videos with just a few taps (see below). You can also automatically edit templates and an array of filters to share them straight to social media.

What intelligent flight modes come with the DJI Mavic Air 2?

HDR Panorama & video: Mavic Air 2 offers DJIā€™s most advanced panorama mode, with a higher dynamic range and colours that are vivid and incredibly accurate. The secret to incredible HDR video is a high-performance Quad Bayer image sensor.

A single frame separates exposure levels in different areas, accurately capturing light and dark details. The images are layered to create a colourful, balanced, and eye-catching picture with higher dynamic range.

Smart Photo: integrates scene recognition, HyperLight, and HDR into one mode for optimal results. Scene recognition optimizes different camera parameters for various scenes and supports intelligent recognition of five categories: sunset, skies, grass, snow, and trees.

In strong lighting conditions, HDR significantly improves the dynamic range, adjusting exposure parameters and layering shots for more vibrant, high-quality photos. In weak lighting conditions, hyperLight optimizes photos, resulting in less noise and enhanced clarity.

Panorama: Mavic Air 2 offers DJIā€™s most advanced panorama mode, with a higher dynamic range and colors that are vivid and incredibly accurate.

Focus Track: Professional-quality footage is effortless thanks to FocusTrack. This easy-to-use suite of 3 intelligent tracking modes.

  • Active Track 3.0 Following subjects while avoiding obstacles is smoother than ever with the latest version of DJIā€™s ActiveTrack technology. With better path-finding and a faster and more accurate prediction of lost subjects, this technology keeps your subject in the centre of the frame, even if they move behind a tree.

  • Spotlight 2.0 Fly freely while the camera remains locked on the subject with this convenient mode. Simply select your subject and fly.

  • Point of Interest 3.0 POI 3.0 improves the capabilities of POI 2.0, especially the recognition of flat surfaces. Where POI 2.0 might lose the target while tracking, this improved feature does not. POI 3.0 is now also able to dynamically track objects like people, cars, and boats.

8K Hyperlapse: Mavic Air 2 supports Hyperlapse in 8K, allowing you to warp time and space for especially stunning footage. Best of all, you can achieve this shot without complex post-processing. Choose from Free, Circle, Course Lock, and Waypoint modes, select the shooting location, and the DJI app does the rest.

What about the Mavic Air 2's camera?

Its simply amazing, one of the best ones you'll find out there today. The camera has a video transmission distance of up to 10 km and can also deliver 1080p FHD resolution livestream directly from the droneā€™s camera. It also has a compact 1/2 inch CMOS sensor shooting videos in 8K and taking photos at 48 megapixels (MP).

How well does the Mavic Air 2 fly?

The DJI Mavic Air 2 can fly up to 10 kms away from you with HD Wi-Fi technology allows for 1080p real-time video transmission. It can also reach up to 68 km / h and fly for a duration of up to 34 mins per fully charged battery. It supports 2.4/5.8GHz dual-frequency communication and automatically switches to the best channel with the lowest interference in real time. This significantly improves the aircraft's anti-interference ability in challenging environments, increasing flight safety

āœ… The low voltage of the battery makes it compatible will airline carry on bags. Find out more info about from your favourite airline here.

With a state of the art obstacle avoidance, the Mavic Air 2 perceives its environment in three directions: forward (22m), backward (23.6m), and downward. An auxiliary light improves visibility, and the extra layer of security that obstacle avoidance provides is ideal for pushing the limits of what is possible.

Where can I buy DJI Mavic Air 2 drone?

Anywhere is probably the best answer.. but as it is a common drone, we simply recommend you where you will find it cheapest. Finding spare parts is easy in many countries. You can purchase it or compare online via our partner Banggood

If you want to be absolutely certain that you're not getting ripped off, then you can buy with peace of mind at the Official DJI Store for a little more money (usually).

Ā

šŸ† Our final thoughts is that the DJI Mavic Air 2 is one of the best all rounder drone available on the market. Whilst being an excellent travel companion and a decent work mate for some, its retail price remains quite high compared to the Mavic Mini. Its weight (570g) will require you to register it before taking off in some countries which can be an inconvenience depending on where you intend to travel.
