Honduras drone laws and rules

Recreational vs Commercial drone use in Honduras

Honduras does not seem to differentiate commercial & recreational drone use. However, both are subject to restrictions. Additionally, depending on your drone's weight & your destination within the country, different rules will apply.

✅ In Honduras, drone laws falls under the Department of Civil Aviation & they can be contacted anytime via:

  • Email: informatica@ahac.gob.hn

  • Phone: (+504) 2234 0263

  • Facebook 😍

✅ Honduras will differentiate your drone based on its weight and categorise it as:

  • small if less than 10 kg

  • medium if between 10 kg & 150 kg

  • big if more than 150 kg

Can I bring my drone to Honduras?

✅ Currently, there doesn't seem to be any restrictions on bringing drones within Honduras as long as your import is considered as legitimate (generally one drone per person).

🚨 Be aware of the airline you purchase to travel as some main ones will only accept your drone on-board if its batteries are detached & placed in a firecase during travel time. Most airlines will have a battery voltage limit based on the recommendation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). You can find more info about a specific airline here.

Where can I fly my drone in Honduras?

✅ We did not find an official fly zone map for drones in Honduras. "If you have more information about this, please share it in the Forum". Thankfully in the meantime, app.airmap.io has listed all flight zones in a convenient way organised in a 3 color legend.

🚨 You should not fly above or near military installations & strategic infrastructure. Fly away from airports & any aerodromes or airports or in other sensible areas of the country. Overall be very mindful where you fly for two main reasons:

  • any drone equipped with any recording device can be considered as espionage if flying at the wrong place at the wrong time.

  • the unfortunate high crime rate

🚨 Avoid the country's borders & urban centers

🦅 National parks & reserves might be on a case by case permission & you might need to check directly with the local park or reserve authorities.

Recreational & Commercial Drone use in Honduras

✅ You do not seem to need* a permission or a license for flying your drone in Honduras. (*not that we're missing the official text here & have asked for it). However, you must be at least 16 years old & there are strict rules as you must fly:

  • at a maximum altitude of 122 m above the ground & always within sight.

  • at least 5 km away from airports & 1 km from heliports (any airport, seaplane base or area where aircraft or helicopter take off & land) & give way to all other type of aircraft.

  • away from areas where its use could interfere with police or first responders.

  • away from any crowds, congested areas & urban places.

  • avoiding sensitive areas including government or military facilities.
