🤘 In this review, we will look at all that makes the DJI Mavic 2 fantastic drones but also understand what are their limits and what are the other options out there based on your needs. This article contains some affiliated links which helps Dronemade keep free and power ever more drone resources to you.
But before anything, here's the official trail video from DJI, the manufacturer of the Mavic 2. Time to grab some 🍿 and enjoy this short and exciting video!
As you've found out the Mavic 2 is a great piece of technology compatible for adventurers looking to capture their best memories from a different angle and make sick aerial videos. This drone features all of the best technology available to date for DJI models, but is packed into a small, carry-able, compact format making it the ultimate travel companion
The DJI Mavic 2 (Pro and Zoom) in a nutshell
✅ There are 2 versions of the Mavic 2; Mavic 2 Pro & Mavic 2 Zoom. To keep things easy we will compare them alongside as only the camera/gimbal changes. All other specs such as the battery and functions are strictly similar. Overall Mavic 2(s) are an incredible piece of technology that will not disappoint you or let you down when in need of reliable equipment. Some of their features are frankly quite outstanding considering their size which could have only been seen on bigger models just a couple of years ago such as:
Omnidirectional obstacle avoidance: now this sound like a swear word but its basically the first drone that has a complete 360° obstacle sensor system that can sense obstacles up to 5 m ahead and land safely if needed.
Return to home: if you loose control or signal, the drone can automatically come back to its starting point by flying up to 30 m and using its obstacle avoidance system.
Mechanical Gimbal Stabilization: your imagery will be stable and neat, no more blurred content and hello to wow effect homemade aerial videos. We will get back to this feature as there is a little difference between the Mavic 2 Pro & Mavic Pro Zoom.
Unparalleled image quality: both models having very powerful cameras and lens, it is undeniably the must have drone if you are into high quality imagery.
🚨 It is not all perfect tho.. as some aspects (usually untold) might pull you off such as:
Price: the Mavic 2 is an expensive drone and it can afford it. Being the leader in potable drones, we expect its price to decrease as soon as competition catches up.
Integrated camera: whilst the camera is great today, it is fixed to the drone meaning if you want a better lens, you will need to change of drone.
Weight: being relatively light at 907 g (Mavic 2 Pro) and 905 g (Mavic 2 Zoom), it remains an increase of 23% compared to its previous version the Mavic Pro. 💡 Based on the country you want to fly, this increase can make a difference for registrations.
✅ Other good news is that alike all DJI drones, your Mavic 2 comes with the DJI App and offers intelligent flight modes and intuitive controls help you create cinematic aerial videos with just a few taps (see below). You can also automatically edit templates and an array of filters to share them straight to social media.
What intelligent flight modes come with my DJI Mavic 2?
Tapfly: envision your shot and the drone captures it for you. Tap your phone screen and your Mavic 2 will fly in the direction of your tap or exactly where you tapped while actively sensing obstacles. Capture shot after shot with just your fingertips.
ActiveTrack 2.0: Your Mavic 2 automatically recognises objects of different shapes and sizes then tracks them according to what they are and how fast they move. This makes tracking much easier and more reliable. You can either "trace" or "profile" (following from a fixed perspective) your subject.
Some of the coolest features of the ActiveTrack 2.0 mode include:
Precise recognition: your Mavic 2 maps a 3D view of the surrounding environment through the main camera and forward dual vision sensors for greater accuracy.
Trajectory prediction: the algorithms help to maintain tracking when your subject is blocked by an obstruction temporarily.
High speed track: in open and unobstructed environments, your Mavic 2 can track fast moving vehicles at speeds of up to 72 km / h
Obstacle sensing: when tracking a target, the Mavic 2 can plan a flight path on its 3D map. It will sense, recognise, and avoid obstacles while recording.
Hyperlapse: Probably the coolest for its purpose, the Mavic Pro 2 offers 4 hyper-lapse modes: Free | Circle | CourseLock | WayPoint. Hyperlapse allows you to create your own time-lapse video by recording at various frame rates which automatically adjust.
Point of interest: fly above your subject or target, set it as your point of interest, fly a little backwards and let your Mavic 2 circle around it making an epic 360° video.
Waypoint 2.0: define an exact flying route on a map, by using Waypoints here and there, and then you determine the altitude and the speed you would like the drone to have. The 2.0 release makes it work in time/hyperlapse modes as well.
Asteroid: It is basically a kind of Rocket (straight up and away) with a stitched view of your surroundings that shows you and the earth in a kind of 3D-like globe.
Boomerang: gives you a 360° view but with an accelerated curve, just like a boomerang. Your Mavic 2 starts out close to you, circling, shooting further away, slowing at the other end, then coming back in close at it completes the 360°.
What about my Mavic 2's camera?
Its pretty good for its price, really good actually... but this is where your Mavic 2 pro and Mavic 2 Zoom have their main difference making you to choose one (or not) based on your actual needs. But first what's in common?
✅ 4K videos: the new norm
✅4 panorama modes: sphere, 180° vertical and horizontal shallow focus.
✅Enhanced HDR Photos: blends a sequence of photos for ghost-free high dynamic range, increasing image clarity.
✅ Hyperlight: a low-light setting designed to enhance your images while reducing noise significantly.
Mavic 2 Pro Camera (Hasselblad Camera)
✅ Made in Sweden, Hasselblad cameras are renowned for their uncompromising image quality. Your Mavic 2 Pro comes equipped with the all-new Hasselblad L1D-20c camera. which possesses Hasselblad’s unique Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution (HNCS) technology, capturing amazing 20 MP (megapixel) aerial shots in stunning colour detail.
1-inch CMOS Sensor: 4 times more effective than the original Mavic Pro. The large sensor also means better performance in low-light environments with a max ISO lifted from 3200 to 12800.
Adjustable Aperture: when shooting in low light, set the aperture to f/2.8 to allow more light in and to capture bright and clear photos. When shooting in well-lit environments, set the aperture to f/11 to make your videos smoother.
Mavic 2 Zoom Camera
✅ Powered by a 1/2.3-inch 12-megapixel sensor with up to 4x zoom, including a 2x optical zoom (24–48 mm), 4 your Mavic 2 Zoom is all about dynamic perspectives. Capturing outstanding 48 MP (megapixel) aerial shots in stunning colour detail.
🦏 SuperZoom: Great for shooting wildlife, your Mavic 2 Zoom's 4x lossless zoom gives you a closer view of faraway objects or animals for e.g., making unique scenes more accessible to capture at a distance. This option also helps you maintain a safer distance as many countries will have strict rules about this.
📸 Dolly Zoom (zoom during flight) automatically adjusts focus when flying, adding an intense, warping visual effect to your video. 💡 When flying manually, you can also set proper focus speed values for even more creative shot options.
Does the imagery transmit well?
Your Mavic 2 is equipped with DJI's OcuSync 2.0 technology which is a video transmission performance greatly enhanced with improvements made to communication distance, video quality and anti-interference, offering you unprecedented control featuring:
Video feed: stream live from your Mavic 2 drone up to a distance of 8 kms!
Real time auto witching: your Mavic 2 remote will automatically switch from 2.4 GHz to 5.8 Ghz is one signal frequency is interrupted by other devices.
Fast downloading, low latency: for a smoother video feed.
✅ All this tech packed into one small drone makes it one of the best tools for stunning photos and videos. You can also bet on the real time auto switch to help you when flying above urban places often jammed by wifi and other wireless device frequencies.
💡 If you want the real deal then you should consider the DJI Goggles (FPV). Switch to Sport Mode and unleash the drone's speed potential. Sport Mode sets the gimbal mode to FPV by default, so the camera moves with you as you fly.
How well will my Mavic 2 fly?
Flight performance
Your DJI Mavic 2 is quite solid and has one of the longest battery lives in the world of drones. It can fly up to 8 kms away from you with Full HD (FHD) Wi-Fi technology allows for 1080p real-time video transmission. It can also reach up to 72 km / h and fly for a duration of up to 31 mins per fully charged battery.
Mavic 2 batteries
The Mavic 2's Intelligent Flight Battery has a capacity of 3950 mAh and a voltage of 15.4 V. Mavic 2 uses a high energy density LiPo battery for optimal performance. Additionally, the batteries estimates remaining flight time, letting you know when to land in real-time.
💡 Spare drone batteries are a must when travelling overseas, they give you more autonomy to fly and take pictures during your trips.
✅ The low voltage of your Mavic 2 drone battery is compatible will most airline carry on bag policies. Find out more info about from your favourite airline here.

Where can I buy my DJI Mavic 2 Pro or Zoom drone?
Anywhere is probably the best answer.. but as it is a common drone, we simply recommend you where you will find it cheapest. Finding spare parts is easy in many countries. You can purchase it or compare online via this offer below:
If you want to be absolutely certain that you're not getting ripped off, then you can buy with peace of mind at the Official DJI Store for a little more money (usually).
🏆 Our final thoughts is that the DJI Mavic 2 models are arguably two of the (if not the) best travel drones (if not the best) available on the market. Considering the Mavic Pro is made by DJI, the number one drone consumer drone manufacturer, its no surprise that this is a great purchase that will please you for hours and maybe even help you get some returns on it.
