Drone vs Toy in Rwanda

@Ouriel 25/11/19

Hi, I’m trying to figure out the rules of flying a drone in Rwanda., In fact, there seems to be some unclarity about what are considered as “Toys”. While I understand that one needs to register a drone, the CAA.gog.rw website clearly states that toys don’t need to be registered (it’s in the FAQ section) but fails to specify what exactly falls under the “toy” category (Size, weight, speed...etc). More specifically, I would try and bring a DJI Mavic Mini. Any idea where I could get that info?

Hi Ouriel, this is an excellent question that got us seeking..

It seems that Rwandan authorities are yet to have published an official list of what drone models are considered as toys.. In the meantime, we think its best to assume that any drone should be considered as an RPAS and must be registered to avoid any onsite complications.

We've taken your feedback and updated our Rwanda blog post accordingly. Thanks heaps for bringing this missing information into light. If you gain any travel experience with your drone in this wonderful country, we would love to read about it and potentially publish some of your adventures !

Thanks for the answer. I will call there and try to figure it out. I've been many times to Rwanda but never needed a drone before, but this time I’d love to use one.

16/12/19 Update: Latest news on the topic: Every flying objects needs to be registered. Its impossible at this point to get a proper list of specs to know heat falls under “toys”, therefore i’d recommend to register everything. I will be there in February ans report on my experience
