Recreational vs Commercial drone use in Monaco
Monaco differentiates commercial & recreational drone use - see our post to differentiate recreational vs commercial drone use. Both uses are subject to strict restrictions, registrations & a code of conduct which is based on the drone's weight and/or your flight(s) purpose(s).
ā In Monaco, the use of drone for any purpose falls under the permission of the Monaco Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). You can contact them via their contact form or via phone at (+377) 98 98 87 11.
šØ Only drones weighting less than 500 g & flying for a recreational use are allowed. You're also not allowed to take any pictures or films during your flight. For all other flights or if you wish to record your flight, you will need a permission, no exceptions.
Can I bring my drone to Monaco?
ā Currently, there doesn't seem to be any restrictions on bringing drones within Monaco as long as your import is considered as legitimate (generally one drone per person).
šØ Be aware of the airline you purchase to travel as some main ones will only accept your drone on-board if its batteries are detached & placed in a firecase during travel time. Most airlines will have a battery voltage limit based on the recommendation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). You can find more info about a specific airline here.
Where can I fly my drone in Monaco?
šØ We didn't find any official drone flight map given by the Monaco Authorities, however they've specified that you're not allowed to fly too close the Princeās Palace or the Palace's square (Le Palais de Monaco et la Place du Palais de Monaco) or closer than 150 m from any heliport (we understand the principality has 3).
ā Now this sounds too bad but keep in mind that the principality is only 4.1 km (the 2nd smallest independent state in the world after The Vatican). See below our interpretation (non official map) of the restricted flight zones according to known information.
Recreational & Commercial drone use in Monaco
ā If your drone weights less than 500 g and does not record any aerial photos or videos, it isn't regulated aside from the forbidden places to fly mapped above (heliports & Palace).
šØ For all other flight purposes or if your drone weights more than 500 g, you must obtain an authorisation prior each flight. *Note that you will need to contact the authorities at least 15 calendar days prior your scheduled flight to give them time (1 month for movie makers).
